Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) campaigned for banning handguns in the 1980s.1 Since the early 1990s, however, she has campaigned for banning a variety of firearms—mostly rifles—she calls “assault weapons,” along with any firearm magazine that holds 11 or more rounds of ammunition, which she calls “large.” Feinstein sponsored the federal “assault weapon” and “large” magazine ban imposed from 1994 to 2004.

Today, the House Public Safety, Finance and Policy Committee began three days of hearings on multiple dangerous anti-gun bills.  They have already heard testimony on House Files 237 and 240, and will hear House Files  238, 239 and others this evening.  Please review the summaries below of the most egregious of these serious threats to our Second Amendment rights in Minnesota. Government officials would do better to focus on issues that would rationally address existing crime problems and empower the law-abiding public to protect themselves and loved ones than to target an entire class of people because it is politically popular at the moment.

Montana: Apprentice Hunting Bill to be Heard in Senate Committee Today

Senate Bill 197, sponsored by state Senator Scott Boulanger (R-44), would establish an apprentice hunting certificate program that allows individuals of any age to learn the art of hunting while under the supervision of a mentor before completing a hunter education course.  SB 197 is scheduled for its first hearing today in the Senate Fish and Game Committee at 3:00 p.m. in hearing room 303 in the Capitol.  While no action will be taken today, it is still imperative that you contact members of the Senate Fish and Game Committee today and urge them to support and promote our hunting heritage by voting for SB 197.

Today, the state House Agriculture, State and Public Lands and Water Resources Committee voted 6 to 3 to repeal the state prohibition on hunting with sound suppressors (which are additionally regulated under federal law) while providing additional penalties for those who use them illegally. Representatives Dan Zwonitzer (R-43), Rita Campbell (R-34), and Stan Blake (D-39) voted against this bill. Last week, the state Senate voted 23 to 7 to pass Senate File 132, introduced by Senator Ogden Driskill (R-01).  This bill is now eligible for a final vote of approval in the House, which could be held as early as tomorrow.  This is your last chance to contact your state Representative and politely encourage his or her support of this common sense hunting reform measure.

Colorado: Plan for Federal Lands in Grand Junction Area Will Close Lands to Recreational Shooting

The Bureau of Land Management’s Grand Junction Field Office (GJFO) has released a draft plan for a 90 day comment period ending April 25.  The planning area consists of about 2.2 million acres of land which includes about 1.2 million acres of public lands managed by the GJFO.  The majority of the planning area is included within Mesa and Garfield Counties, with small portions falling within Montrose and Rio Blanco Counties.

Alaska: Important Self-Defense Legislation to be Heard Tomorrow

House Bill 24, introduced by state Representative Mark Neuman (R-10), is important self-defense legislation.  Under existing state law, there is no duty-to-retreat if a person is in their home, business, or on their own property.  HB 24 would extend this to recognize the right to use force, including deadly force, for self-defense anywhere a person has a legal right to be.

Homeowner scares off home invader, The News-Sentinel, Fort Wayne, Ind. 02/01/2013

A homeowner was at his house in Fort Wayne, Ind. when a burglar armed with a handgun broke into the home. The homeowner responded by retrieving a gun and firing at the criminal, causing him to flee. Police do not believe the burglar was struck. Fort Wayne Police spokesman Sgt. Mark Brooks told local media that it was unlikely that the armed citizen would face charges, as Indiana’s castle doctrine law protects homeowners.

Alert: Universal Background Checks Explained

President Obama is saying that 70% of NRA members support "universal background checks."  I assure you, that simply is not true!  It appears he is citing a poll question from one of NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg's phony polls of people who "self-identify" as NRA members.  People could easily have assumed that "all sellers" meant licensed dealers at gun shows.  Clearly, that question is not about "universal background checks."  Attached is an article explaining universal background checks.

State wildlife agencies stand to benefit from increased gun, ammo sales

Panic buying of firearms and ammunition has store shelves looking pretty bare nowadays.At the same time, though, it has wildlife administrators wondering how to spend the windfall of federal dollars associated with all those purchases.Curtis Taylor, wildlife chief for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, said the state stands to gain as much as $1.4 million in Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration funds, all of it related to the recent run on guns and ammo.

Tennessee: 2013 Version of the Safe Commute Act to be Heard in Senate Committee on Tuesday

The Tennessee Senate Judiciary Committee will hear and consider the 2013 Safe Commute Act on Tuesday, February 5 at 3:30 p.m. in the Legislative Plaza Room 12. If enacted, the 2013 Safe Commute Act would recognize that hard-working Tennesseans’ right to self-defense does not end when they drive onto their employer’s property or into publicly accessible parking lots.  Senate Bill 142, sponsored by Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey (R-4), would allow individuals with a valid handgun carry permit to transport and store a firearm or firearm ammunition in the permit holder’s privately-owned motor vehicle in public or private parking areas under certain conditions.
